This project comprised a large scale retail and residential intervention and correction to a “damaged” site in the very heart of Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands. Controversial amongst colleagues, the jewel needed to be returned to the people without the fakeness, kitsch-ness or iconic-ness, but with sincerity and intention. The style has embraced historical values and the cultural continuum. On this scale the past served to define a positive condition and juxtaposed the vernacular without the homogenity; blending and complementing contemporary elements to reinforce the classic edge and distinguish a time frame for future generations. All the ingredients were distilled to optimize concept, narrative, form, detail; the craft a search of composition and proportion weight and balance. The result: “not a stranger in the city but a family member” sheltering, trusting embracing and inspiring.
